What kind of volunteer jobs can I do at the shelter?
Office Staff Assistant
Job Description: Take messages off of the answering machine; make photocopies; write thank you notes; stuff/address envelopes. Clean the office area, including windows and counters; greet customers, explain shelter procedures and direct customer to correct areas.
Skills Needed: pleasant phone speaking voice; neat handwriting; positive personality, able to repeat information with patience; ability to communicate effectively; word processing skills helpful, but not necessary.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week; flexible schedule (ex. Phone work and cleaning are to be done prior to open hours; greeting customers is done during open hours).
Events/Fundraising Helper
Job Description: Help with general tasks at fundraising events throughout the year-for example, sell tickets, bake desserts, man booths, sell chocolate, etc. Examples of events are Woofstock, Spaghetti Dinner, Casino Night, Spieidie Fest, Pet photos with Santa, bake sales.
Skills Needed: Enjoy being around people and be able to communicate effectively!
Time Commitment: Time requirement varies depending upon event schedule and available shifts-shifts can last 2 or more hours on the day of an event. At least one event is held per month.
Cat Care Assistant
Job Description: Clean cat cages and litter boxes; fill water, food bowls and litter boxes; wash bowls. Assist with laundry; groom and brush cats; socialize with cats. Be an adoption helper, including at PetSmart in Vestal.
Skills Needed: You must be willing to work as part of a team, able to follow strict procedural guidelines and be a self starter. Be able to read and respect cat body language postures; must be able to bend, lift up to 50 lbs, and be able to tolerate cleaning products. Be able to communicate in a friendly, positive manner.
Time Commitment: 2 or more hours per week.
Dog Care Assistant
Job Description: Fill water bowls; wash bowls; assist with laundry; socialize with dogs. Walk dogs-including cleaning up after the dogs. Groom dogs; minor kennel clean up. Be an adoption helper.
Skills Needed: You must be willing to work as part of a team; must be able to follow strict procedural guidelines and be a self starter; should be able to read and respect dog body postures; must be able to bend, lift up to 100 lbs, and be able to tolerate cleaning products; must be in good health-able to walk 1-2 miles a day; must be able to communicate in a friendly, positive manner.
Time Commitment: 2 or more hours per week
Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
