Animal Shelter Contest

volunteering opportunities

Volunteers are welcomed at The Humane Society. You can help out in one of the following four areas: office helper, events/fundraising helper, cat care assistant, and dog care assistant. In order to volunteer, you need to:

  1. Carefully review the job descriptions, skills requirements, and time commitment needed in order to find the best match for both you and the shelter. Click here for a list!
  2. Go to the shelter during open hours to take a self-guided orientation tour. An office staff member will assist you with this.
  3. Fill out a volunteer application and submit it to us.
  4. Sign up and attend a specialized training session that lasts about 1 1/2 hours in your volunteer area.

Junior volunteers, ages 12-17, are welcomed in all areas except dog care, but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian at all times.

Training Sessions

New volunteer training sessions take place seasonally at the following times:

  • Winter Season: January and February
  • Spring Season: April and May
  • Summer Season: July and August
  • Fall Season: October and November

Should all training slots be filled during a season, interested parties will need to wait until the next season to be trained. We cannot accommodate a waiting list. Thank you for understanding that our volunteer program is run by volunteers with full-time jobs and responsibilities outside of the shelter.

If you have questions, e-mail the volunteer coordinator at bhumanesocvolunteers@gmail.com.

Volunteering Advancement

Once you are accepted into the volunteer program, there are volunteer advancement opportunities available.
